Antioquia: Adventures in the Colombian Andes

Colombia is a vibrant land full of rich culture and stunning natural landscapes. It’s easy to be swept away by the warmth of the Colombian people, the flavors of its diverse cuisine and the rhythms of its lively music. For us, the real magic happened in Antioquia, an area that captivated our hearts with its scenic beauty and fascinating history.

Where is Antioquia?

Antioquia lies in the northwestern part of Colombia and is well-known for its stunning mountains, valleys and rivers. This region is home to Medellín, Colombia’s second-largest city, along with many picturesque towns and villages that offer visitors a chance to experience its charm. Antioquia is famous for its coffee plantations, beautiful colonial architecture and the picturesque town of El Peñol, which boasts an incredible story of transformation.

Our Journey to Guatapé and El Peñol

We traveled to Guatapé-El Peñol using a car hire service, here the driver recommended spending at least one night in the area. What began as a short visit turned into a memorable four-day adventure. The region is so captivating that we found ourselves exploring deeper into its beauty. Below, we’ll share the highlights, attractions and family-friendly activities that made our visit unforgettable.

Family-Friendly Resort in Guatapé

Our biggest tip? While there are many day tours from Medellín to Guatapé, we highly recommend booking an overnight stay. Once you’re here, you’ll want to stay longer! Hotel Los Recuerdos quickly became our favorite family-friendly spot. Located along the reservoir’s edge, it offers breathtaking views of the water and the magnificent La Piedra del Peñol, a towering rock formation that’s a must-see.

The area offers something for everyone—whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation or cultural immersion. Families will find plenty to enjoy, from boat tours on the reservoir to wandering the colorful streets of Guatapé.
