Dragon fruit, also known as Pitaya, is a tropical fruit that comes from the Hylocereus cactus, primarily native to Mexico and Central America. It is also cultivated in Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines. Dragon fruit varieties are based on the color of the flesh:
Dragon Fruit Varieties
White-Fleshed Dragon Fruit
(Hylocereus undatus):
- Skin: Bright pink or red with green scales
- Flesh: White with small black seeds
- Taste: Mild and slightly sweet
Red-Fleshed Dragon Fruit
(Hylocereus costaricensis):
- Skin: Bright pink or red with green scales
- Flesh: Bright red or magenta with small black seeds
- Taste: Sweeter and more flavorful than white -fleshed varieties
Yellow-Fleshed Dragon Fruit
(Selenicereus megalanthus):
- Skin: Yellow with small, fewer scales compared to the pink-skinned varieties
- Flesh: White with small black seeds
- Taste: Sweetest of all the varieties, often compared to tropical fruits like kiwi
Pink-Fleshed Dragon Fruit
(Hylocereus polyrhizus):
- Skin: Similar to the red-skinned varieties
- Flesh: Light to deep pink with small black seeds
- Taste: Mildly sweet, but slightly tangier than the white-fleshed type
Health Benefits:
Dragon fruit is a good source of Vitamin C, which is important for a healthy immune system and skin health. It also contains dietary fiber which can aid digestion and promote gut health.
