La Piedra Del Peñol aka El Peñol de Guatapé in Antioquia, Colombia is the perfect example of rock formation known as an inselberg. Inselbergs are prominent isolated hill or mountain that seem to rise abruptly from a plain or plateau, often showcasing unique geological features and serving as a focal point in the surrounding area.

El Peñol De Guatapé, or The Rock Of Guatapé is a monolithic rock formation soars over 200 meters (656 feet) into the sky, dominating the horizon and drawing the gaze of all who encounter it.
One of the defining features of El Peñol de Guatapé is the vertical cleft that runs down one side of the rock, creating a distinctive feature that sets it apart from other inselbergs around the world. This natural cleft is not only a visual marvel but also serves as a point of interest for visitors exploring the rock and its surroundings.
Climbing the 740-step staircase that winds its way up the inselberg provides adventurers with a unique opportunity to witness firsthand the geological marvel that is El Peñol De Guatapé. On reaching the summit you are rewarded with panoramic views of the Guatapé Reservoir, lush greenery and quaint towns with splashes of lavish haciendas. This spectacular view offers a perspective that highlights the sheer height of this remarkable rock formation.

Underwater History: Before the area was flooded to create the Guatapé Reservoir, the rock was a standalone monolith. Today, only a portion of the original rock is visible above the water.
Local Legend: According to local legend, the vertical cleft that runs down one side of the rock is said to have been caused by a lightning bolt, splitting the rock in two.
Artistic Legacy: The staircase that leads to the summit of El Peñol was hand-carved into the rock by local villagers, showcasing their craftsmanship and dedication to making the landmark accessible to visitors.
360-Degree Views: Once at the top of El Peñol, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape, including the Guatapé Reservoir, forests and quaint towns dotting the countryside.
Note: If you are ever in Colombia, ask your host or any tour operator to take you to Guatape. The entire area is awe-mazing. The entrance fee for climbing the monolith is about US $4 however, we didn’t climb as we were travelling with young ones. But it was just an amazing experience to gaze upon this wonder, while taking in the breathtaking views of Guatape, Perusing the restaurants and giftshops at the base of the rock was a fun and inexpensive endeavour.
