These round or oval-shaped rocks are agate-filled nodules that form within volcanic rocks such as rhyolite. When these nodules are broken open, they reveal a hollow cavity lined with colorful agate and sometimes other minerals like quartz or jasper. The name “thunder egg” is believed to have originated from Native American folklore, where it was thought that thunderstorms created these rocks and that they held the power of the thunder gods.
In some places where thunder eggs are abundant, such as in Oregon in the United States and Thunderbird Park in Queensland, Australia, there are dedicated sites where visitors can hunt for and collect these fascinating geological specimens.
The largest thunder egg ever found was discovered in the Black Rock Desert in Millard County, Utah, United States. This massive thunder egg, named the “Hole in the Ground,” measured about 4 feet (1.2 meters) in diameter and weighed over 1,500 pounds (680 kilograms).
