All About the Oriental Garden Lizard

The Oriental Garden Lizard, also known as the Changeable Lizard or Garden Lizard, is a species of agamid lizard. It features a distinctive color-changing ability, which can range from brown to bright green or orange, depending on its mood, temperature, and environmental conditions.

Size: Adults typically grow to about 20 to 30 centimeters (8 to 12 inches) in length, including their tail.

Habitat: Native to South and Southeast Asia, including countries like India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, and Malaysia.

Behavior: The Oriental Garden Lizard is an arboreal species, often seen perched on trees, shrubs, or fences. Males will display their vibrant colors to attract females and ward off rivals. They are also very territorial during mating season

Diet: It primarily feeds on insects and other small invertebrates, but it can also consume small fruits and flowers.

Reproduction: They lay eggs in a burrow or hidden in the soil. After laying, the eggs incubate for several weeks before hatching.

Color Change: While it doesn’t change color as dramatically as some other species, the Oriental Garden Lizard’s color shifts can be quite noticeable. The color change is a means of communication, thermoregulation and camouflage.

Conservation Status: Not endangered. Due to its wide distribution and adaptability to various environments it is to be of “Least Concern” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

The Oriental Garden Lizard is a fascinating example of how reptiles can adapt to and thrive in diverse environments while displaying interesting behavioral traits.

If you find yourself exploring the gardens or forests of Asia, keep an eye out for this spectacular lizard.
