Physalis Peruviana, commonly known as Cape Gooseberries, are native to South America but have spread to places like South Africa, England and many Pacific islands.
Health Benefits
Cape Gooseberries are packed with Vitamin C and offer a range of health benefits. They are known for their anti-bacterial, immune-boosting and anti-inflammatory properties, making them a valuable addition to any diet.
Taste and Texture
My first experience with gooseberries led me to believe they’re an acquired taste. They remind me of cherry tomatoes but are denser, with a tart flavor and numerous tiny seeds that are barely noticeable. While eating them on their own, I had to remind myself of their incredible health benefits. Interestingly, the nutritional value remains intact even when cooked, which inspired me to create a Caramelized Gooseberry Mango Salad—a truly delicious dish!
Other Names
Cape Gooseberries are known by several names around the world, including:
- Aztec Berry
- Golden Berry
- Umami Berry
- Peruvian Ground Cherry
- Inca Berry
- African Ground Cherry
These little fruits go by many names, but they all share the same impressive nutritional profile.
