The Heritage Banyan Tree at Son Tra, Vietnam

Perched on the lush Son Tra Peninsula, The Heritage Banyan tree of Da Nang is a towering natural wonder. This ancient tree, is over 800 years old, reaches 22 meters in height with a sprawling circumference of 85 meters.

Journey to an 800-Year-Old Giant

A scenic 30-minute drive from Da Nang City, through the winding roads of Son Tra Mountain. On arrival you’ll be greeted by spectacular views of the surrounding forests, the sea and even the distant Cham Islands. This location also offers a chance to encounter local wildlife, including the famous red-shanked douc langur and many bird species.

Historical Site

The area was a strategic refuge during two of Vietnam’s pivotal conflicts. This location was used by local militias, such as the Quang Nam-Da Nang self-defense forces. In the First Indochina Wars against the French and the later Vietnam War.

The dense, secluded environment offered cover for guerrilla fighters who planned missions, conducted training and sought shelter from enemy forces. Its isolated position and thick canopy made it an ideal hideout.

The sprawling roots and branches create a natural haven, offering shady spots for visitors to picnic. Benches tucked under its foliage invite you to sit, breathe in the fresh sea air and take in the panoramic views of the Son Tra Peninsula and beyond.

  • Pack a picnic basket (No food at this location)

For convenience, fresh jelly coconuts and other beverages are available from vendors at a nearby security station. It’s the ideal spot to relax, surrounded by the deep history and nature of this ancient tree.

Location

The tree is located in Tho Quang Ward about 30 minutes from Danang City, overlooking lush vegetation and sea. The area is home to numerous monkeys, birds and other wildlife.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit is in the dry season (March and September) offering best conditions for exploration. Avoid rainy days as the roads can become slippery, making it difficult to reach the site.

  1. Linh Ung Pagoda: Home to the tallest Lady Buddha statue in Vietnam. This serene site is a short stop along the way to the Banyan Tree.
