Art: Vietnamese Rice Grain Painting

Time-honored art forms: Creating Art With Grains & Seeds

My first encountered with the  unique craft known as Rice Grain Painting was in Hoi An. Gazing on the artwork one can’t help to ponder on the time, patience and steady hands required to master such an artform.

The majority of Rice Grain Painting seems to depict the importance of rice in Vietnamese culture. Each grain carefully placed and arrange to showcase scenes of rural life, landscapes and historical events.

Origins Of Rice Grain Painting

There are stories that the art form originated in India. Other accounts of its beginning in the Red River Delta of Vietnam. The Red River Delta is known for Wet Rice farming and the Dong Son Culture. Regardless of its origin, Vietnamese artisans have made Rice Grain Painting famous.

3 Countries known for art forms using grains and seeds:

  1. Ukraine:  A traditional  artform known as “Petrykivka painting”, involves creating colourful floral designs using a special technique of painting with barley, wheat and other natural materials. These designs are often found on decorative items like plates, boxes and furniture.
  2. India: Particularly in the state of Tamil Nadu, a traditional art form called “Kolam” or “Rangoli,” is the creation of patterns and designs on the floor using coloured rice flour, grains or seeds. These are made to welcome guest and bring good luck during special occasions like festivals and weddings
  3. Mexico:  There is a long-standing tradition of creating intricate and colourful “Huichol art” by the Huichol people. The creation of colourful designs on gourds, masks and sculptures using seeds, beads and grains. The beadwork and use of natural materials make Huichol art truly unique.

Other similar art forms using grains like barley, wheat and seeds can be found in various cultures worldwide. Each reflecting deep connections to agriculture and nature. Our salute to the artists worldwide who are using their creativity to preserve traditional artforms.
